CTC, gross and in-hand salary: the difference →
CTC is one total. An offer letter gives the number and then splits it into parts. Basic salary, HRA and special allowance are your monthly salary. Employer PF and gratuity count in the CTC but are saved for you: PF in your provident fund account, gratuity as a payout when you leave. Variable pay comes once a year.
Only the monthly salary reaches your payslip. PF, professional tax and income tax come off it before the rest reaches your bank, which is why in-hand pay is always lower than the CTC divided by twelve. On 12 lakh, the monthly part is ₹85,389 a month and ₹82,189 of it reaches the bank.
The special allowance has no fixed rate. Employers set it last, as whatever makes the parts add up to the CTC. That is why two offers with the same CTC can have very different basic salaries.

04 The check
Since 21 November 2025, at least 50% of your fixed pay counts as wages when gratuity is worked out. A low basic no longer makes it smaller.
On a 12 lakh CTC, basic is
Before 21 November 2025
Gratuity counted on₹40,000
In your bank a month₹92,430
From 21 November 2025
Gratuity counted on₹50,000
In your bank a month₹91,949
−₹481 a month. The rule counts 50% of fixed pay as wages, so gratuity is worked out on more, and your bank pay is lower than it was.
The 50% wage rule explained, with worked examples →
The Code on Wages defines wages as basic pay plus the other allowances, but if the other allowances are more than half of your total pay, the extra is added back to wages. Gratuity is worked out as 15 days of wages for each year of service, so the wages figure matters.
On a ₹12,00,000 CTC with basic at 40% of fixed pay, basic is ₹40,000 a month, but wages count as ₹50,000. Gratuity is worked out on the larger figure, so more of the CTC goes to gratuity and less is left for your monthly pay: ₹481 less in your bank each month than the same structure gave before.
This calculator works PF on basic, as the EPF Scheme words it. Whether PF follows the new wages definition too is not settled in law.
05 Questions
A CTC breakup splits the one yearly figure on your offer letter into its parts: basic salary, HRA and special allowance (paid to you every month), employer PF and gratuity (set aside for you), and variable pay (paid once a year). On a 12 lakh CTC, about ₹91,949 of it reaches your bank each month.
No. CTC is what your employer spends on you in a year. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank after PF, professional tax and income tax. On ₹12,00,000 CTC the in-hand salary is about ₹91,949 a month, because ₹29,360 of employer PF and ₹28,846 of gratuity never come to you as pay.
Usually 40% to 50% of fixed pay. From 21 November 2025, the Code on Wages counts at least 50% of fixed pay as wages when it works out gratuity, so a basic below 50% no longer lowers gratuity. A basic of 50% of fixed pay or more is the structure the labour codes expect.
Yes. Special allowance is ordinary salary and is taxed in full, in both tax regimes. It is the part of your fixed pay that is left after basic, HRA and the employer contributions, so employers use it to make the parts add up to the CTC.
Yes. Variable pay is paid once a year, so it is not in the monthly figure. With 10% of a ₹12,00,000 CTC as variable pay, the monthly in-hand salary falls from ₹91,949 to ₹82,189, and the variable pay of ₹1,20,000 arrives later, less the tax it adds.
Yes. Press "Download Excel" under the result. The file has live formulas, so you can change the CTC, the basic share or the PF choice and watch the structure rebalance. There is also a free blank template, and "Save as PDF" gives a one-page salary structure.
