Going from CTC to in-hand takes things away: employer PF and gratuity first, then your own PF, professional tax and income tax. Going from in-hand to CTC puts them back, in the opposite order.
The hard part is income tax, because the tax depends on the very salary you are looking for. The calculator does not guess: it tries CTCs until it finds the smallest one whose in-hand pay reaches your figure, using the same rules as the in-hand salary calculator. That is why the answer matches what the forward calculator would show for the same CTC.
Anything you change under "More options" changes the answer: the share of basic, PF on the ceiling or on full basic, NPS, and whether employer PF and gratuity sit inside the CTC.
02 By monthly pay
The CTC For Common Monthly Pay
To take home ₹50,000 a month you need a CTC of about ₹6,84,208. For ₹1,00,000, about ₹12,98,985.

These use the calculator's usual choices: basic at 50% of fixed pay, PF on the wage ceiling, Bengaluru, no variable pay, and the cheaper of the two tax regimes. The CTC grows faster than the monthly pay: as pay rises, income tax takes a larger share, and your employer's PF and gratuity grow with your salary.
03 Before you ask
Three Things To Know Before You Ask
A CTC is only half of an offer. How it is split decides what reaches your bank.
-
Say a CTC, not an in-hand figure
₹8,25,000
Offers are written in CTC. A round figure just above your minimum gives you ₹61,450 a month.
-
Ask what share is variable
−₹6,710
a month if 10% of 8.25 lakh is paid as variable pay instead of fixed. Variable pay comes once a year.
-
Ask for a basic of 50% or more
₹496
a month is what a 35% basic costs you under the labour codes, because gratuity is worked out on a larger wage.
04 Questions
Questions About CTC From In-Hand
How do I calculate CTC from in-hand salary?
Work backwards. Add your PF, professional tax and income tax to your in-hand pay to get your gross pay for the month. Multiply by 12, then add what your employer sets aside inside the CTC: its PF share, gratuity and any variable pay. For ₹60,000 a month in hand, that comes to a CTC of about ₹8,07,163. The calculator above does the same working for any figure.
What CTC do I need for ₹50,000 a month in hand?
About ₹6,84,208 a year (6.84 lakh), with the calculator's usual choices: basic at 50% of fixed pay, PF on the wage ceiling, Bengaluru, no variable pay and the cheaper tax regime.
What CTC do I need for ₹1,00,000 a month in hand?
About ₹12,98,985 a year (12.99 lakh), with the same usual choices. At this pay income tax is a large part of what comes off, so the CTC grows faster than the monthly pay does.
Is in-hand salary always a fixed share of CTC?
No. At ₹60,000 a month in hand you keep about 89% of an 8.07 lakh CTC over the year, but the share falls as pay rises, because tax takes more and employer PF and gratuity grow with the salary.
Does variable pay change the CTC I should ask for?
Yes. Variable pay is paid once a year, so it does not help the monthly figure. If 20% of the CTC is variable, you need ₹10,08,954 to take home ₹60,000 a month, against ₹8,07,163 with none.
Does the city change the CTC I need?
A little. Professional tax depends on the state. For ₹60,000 a month, Bengaluru needs ₹8,07,163 and Delhi, which charges no professional tax, needs ₹8,04,704.
Can I work back from my gross pay instead?
Yes. Choose "My gross pay" above and enter the gross pay on your payslip. A gross pay of ₹80,000 a month, for example, comes from a CTC of about ₹10,13,729.
