Your Payslip Shows A Different Number? The usual reasons, worked out for you

PF On Your Full Basic

On full basic your PF would be ₹6,000 a month and your in-hand ₹85,396 (₹6,553 less). PF on full basic (requires a joint request accepted by EPFO).

Variable Pay Or A Bonus

If part of your CTC is a bonus or variable pay, it is paid once a year, so your monthly pay is lower than a figure that treats all of it as fixed.

Tax Deducted Differently

On this salary we find no income tax in the New regime, so TDS should be nil. If your payslip shows tax, your employer is probably deducting under the other regime, or has not yet seen your choice or investment proofs. Ask HR which regime they are using.

Restructured After The Labour Codes

Your basic is already 50% of your fixed pay, the level the Code on Wages favours, so a restructure would not change this figure.

Insurance, Loans Or Other Deductions

Group insurance, meal cards and loan instalments come out of your pay but not out of your CTC.

You Joined Or Changed Jobs This Year

Your new employer works out tax from your joining date, and may use your previous employer’s figures (Form 12B). The first months can differ from this full-year estimate.

01 The basics

CTC And In-Hand Salary Are Different Numbers

On a 12 lakh CTC, ₹93 of every ₹100 reaches your bank. The rest goes to tax, PF and gratuity.

Choose a CTC

  • ₹93 Reaches your bank ₹11,09,934 a year · Your take-home pay
  • ₹0 Income tax ₹0 a year · Deducted each month (TDS)
  • ₹3 Your PF ₹29,360 a year · Saved for you in EPF
  • ₹2 Employer’s PF ₹29,360 a year · In your CTC, never in your pay
  • ₹2 Gratuity ₹28,846 a year · Paid when you leave, after 5 years
  • under ₹1 Professional tax ₹2,500 a year · A small state tax

That is ₹91,949 a month in your bank. Work out yours exactly ↑

A ₹12,00,000 CTC comes to about ₹91,949 a month in hand in October 2026, for someone in Bengaluru on the new tax regime with PF on the wage ceiling.

CTC, or cost to company, is what your employer spends on you in a year. In-hand salary, also called take-home pay, is the part that reaches your bank account each month.

Some of the gap is money that counts in your CTC but is never paid to you as salary: your employer's PF contribution, gratuity, and sometimes insurance. The rest is taken out of your pay: your own PF, professional tax and income tax.

Divide the gross salary by 12, take off PF and professional tax, and you have the October figure: ₹91,949 a month. It is the October figure because the PF ceiling changed in September 2026. The payslip section under the calculator shows every month.

02 The formula

How To Calculate In-Hand Salary From CTC

In-hand salary is your gross monthly pay minus PF, professional tax and income tax. Five steps, shown here on an 18 lakh CTC.

  1. Take Out What You Never Receive

Employer PF, gratuity and any insurance the employer pays are in your CTC but not in your pay. What is left is your gross salary for the year.

  2. Divide By 12

That is your gross monthly pay.

  3. Subtract Your PF

On the ceiling, PF is 12% of ₹25,000: at most ₹3,000 a month from 17 September 2026 (₹1,800 before).

  4. Subtract Professional Tax

Your state sets it, and some states do not charge it.

  5. Subtract Income Tax

Your employer works out your tax for the year and deducts it in monthly parts (TDS).

An 18 lakh CTC, rupees a year October 2026

In-hand = gross monthly pay − PF − professional tax − TDS

In-hand salary = gross monthly pay − PF − professional tax − TDS

Two things change this. Variable pay or a bonus is paid once a year, so it stays out of the monthly figure. And if your gross pay is ₹21,000 a month or less, ESI is deducted as well, and your employer's share of it comes out of your CTC.

In the new regime the standard deduction is ₹75,000, and a rebate of up to ₹60,000 means no tax when taxable income is up to ₹12,00,000. For a salaried person that is a salary of ₹12,75,000. The old regime has a ₹50,000 standard deduction and a rebate only up to ₹5,00,000 of taxable income, but it lets you deduct HRA, 80C investments, health insurance and home-loan interest.

A 4% health and education cess is added to the tax in both regimes, and a surcharge applies above ₹50,00,000 of income. The calculator includes both, and works out the two regimes side by side so you can see which is lower.

Wages under the Code on Wages, from 21 November 2025

₹35,000 → ₹50,000

With basic at 35% of a ₹12,00,000 CTC, gratuity is now worked out on at least 50% of pay. It comes out of the CTC, not your monthly pay.

Read the full explanation

Since 21 November 2025, the Code on Wages defines wages as at least 50% of your total pay. Gratuity is worked out on that figure. If your basic is only 35% of a ₹12,00,000 CTC, gratuity is calculated on ₹50,000 a month instead of ₹35,000. That raises what your employer sets aside inside your CTC. The calculator shows a notice with the rupee effect when your basic is below 50%.

Whether PF should follow the same definition has not been settled in law, so the calculator works PF on basic unless you choose otherwise, and does not assume either way.

The other change you will see in a payslip is the PF wage ceiling, which went from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026. PF at the ceiling is now ₹3,000 a month, up from ₹1,800. The calculator applies each ceiling by date, so a month before the change and a month after it come out differently.

06 Questions

Questions About In-Hand Salary

How do I calculate in-hand salary from CTC?

Take out what your employer pays but you never receive (employer PF, gratuity and any insurance), divide what is left by 12 to get gross monthly pay, then subtract your PF, professional tax and income tax. On a ₹12,00,000 CTC in Bengaluru that gives ₹91,949 a month in October 2026. The calculator above does each step for any CTC and shows the working.

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?

CTC is what your employer spends on you in a year, including its own PF contribution and gratuity. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank account after your PF, professional tax and income tax. On a ₹12,00,000 CTC, ₹11,09,934 reaches you over the year.

How much is the in-hand salary on a 10 lakh CTC?

About ₹75,683 a month in October 2026, with the calculator's defaults: Bengaluru, new tax regime, basic at 50% and PF on the wage ceiling. Your city, how your company deducts PF and any variable pay change it, so enter your own figures above.

Why is my in-hand salary less than CTC divided by 12?

₹1,00,000 is a twelfth of a ₹12,00,000 CTC. About ₹4,851 of the gap is your employer's PF and gratuity, which sit inside the CTC and are not paid as salary. The rest is your own PF, professional tax and any income tax.

Is PF part of my in-hand salary?

No. Your PF (12% of your PF wages) is deducted from your pay and goes into your provident fund, so it lowers the figure that reaches your bank. Your employer's matching contribution is part of your CTC and is not in your monthly pay either. Most employers work PF on a capped wage; deducting it on your full basic needs a joint request that EPFO accepts.

What changed with the PF wage ceiling in September 2026?

The ceiling went from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026. PF at the ceiling is now ₹3,000 a month instead of ₹1,800. If your basic is above the ceiling and your company deducts on the ceiling, your in-hand is ₹1,200 lower from October 2026 than it was before. The calculator shows October by default and every other month in the payslip section.

Which tax regime does the calculator use?

Both. It works out your tax under the new and the old regime and uses the one that leaves you with less tax, then says which one and how much it saves. You can force either regime under "Make it exact". The old regime only wins when your deductions (HRA, 80C, home-loan interest and the like) are large.

Is income up to ₹12L tax-free in FY 2026-27?

In the new regime, tax is nil when taxable income is up to ₹12,00,000, because the rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels it. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, that is a salary of ₹12,75,000. Just above the limit, marginal relief caps the tax at the extra income, so a raise there adds little to your take-home for a while.

Does a bonus or variable pay change the monthly figure?

Yes. Variable pay is paid once a year, so it is not in the monthly figure. If 10% of a ₹12,00,000 CTC is variable, your monthly in-hand falls to ₹82,189 and about ₹1,20,000 arrives after tax when the bonus is paid.

What is professional tax, and does it apply to me?

Professional tax is a state tax on salary, and states cap it at a few thousand rupees a year. It is not charged everywhere. In Karnataka the calculator uses ₹200 a month and ₹300 in February, ₹2,500 for the year. If your state's schedule is not modelled yet, the calculator says so instead of guessing.

How is gratuity treated?

Gratuity is set aside by your employer and paid when you leave, usually after five years of service, so it is not in your monthly pay. On a ₹12,00,000 CTC the calculator sets aside ₹28,846 a year. Since 21 November 2025, the Code on Wages works it out on at least 50% of your pay, even when your basic is lower.

Why does my payslip show a different figure?

The usual reasons are PF deducted on full basic, variable pay that is paid yearly, income tax spread unevenly across the months, insurance or loan deductions, joining mid-year, and a pay structure that changed under the labour codes. The "Why your payslip may differ" section under the calculator lets you tick the ones that apply and shows what each does to the figure.

Is the in-hand salary the same every month?

Mostly. In FY 2026-27 PF changed during the year, so April's figure is ₹93,149 and October's is ₹91,949. Professional tax is higher in some months (₹300 in February), tax can be spread unevenly by your employer, and variable pay comes once a year. The payslip section lists all twelve months.

Do I need to give any personal details?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the page never asks for your name, email or employer. A link you copy carries only the numbers you entered.
