If you work in one of the states with no professional tax, nothing is taken from your pay for it. Where the state has repealed the tax, as Odisha did by an ordinance, the repeal rests on an ordinance that lapses unless the legislature replaces it, so we say what we know and when we checked.

The states we have not verified are listed on the hub so you can see them. We would rather show nothing than a figure we cannot stand behind.

02 The cap

The ₹2,500 Legal Cap

The Constitution lets a state charge at most ₹2,500 a year in professional tax. Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu reach it; West Bengal stops at ₹2,496, Andhra Pradesh stops at ₹2,400, Gujarat stops at ₹2,400 and Telangana stops at ₹2,400.

Tamil Nadu ₹2,500
West Bengal ₹2,496
Andhra Pradesh ₹2,400
Gujarat ₹2,400
Telangana ₹2,400

The ₹2,500 limit is Article 276 of the Constitution. It applies to each state separately and to each person for the year, however high the salary is. Most states get there with ₹200 a month and a slightly larger payment in one month.

The picture shows the most a person can pay in each state we have verified, on a very high salary. A lower salary pays a lower slab, down to nothing below the first band. The rows below it show what applies to you.

03 The February rule

Why One Month Costs A Little More

In Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, one month costs a little more so the year adds up to the legal figure: February is ₹300 in Karnataka, March is ₹212 in Madhya Pradesh, February is ₹300 in Maharashtra.

  12. Mar₹212
The lit month is the one that differs. Both years add up to ₹2,500 and ₹2,500.
Read the full explanation

A state that wants ₹2,500 a year cannot do it with a round monthly amount. Maharashtra and Karnataka take ₹200 for eleven months and ₹300 in February. Madhya Pradesh works from your yearly income and takes a slightly different amount in March.

This is why a payslip for one month can show a different professional tax from the others. It is not a mistake: it is the last payment of the year.

05 Old or new

Is Professional Tax Deductible

Professional tax paid is deducted from your salary income in the old regime. In the new regime there is no deduction for it, so you still pay it but it does not lower your income tax.

Old regimeDeductibleSubtracted from your taxable salary

New regimeNot deductibleYou still pay it, but it saves no income tax

Up to ₹2,500 a year, whatever the state.
Read the full explanation

If you choose the old regime, the professional tax deducted from your salary (up to ₹2,500 a year) is subtracted from your taxable income, which saves a little income tax. The new regime allows only the standard deduction from salary.

The saving is small: it is the professional tax times your slab rate, with cess. It is one reason to compare both regimes on your whole salary rather than on one line.
