Tamil Nadu Professional Tax Slabs

Tamil Nadu takes ₹180 every six months in its first band and up to ₹1,250 every six months in its top band, and nothing up to ₹3,500. The most a person pays is ₹2,500 a year.

Tamil Nadu’s professional tax is worked on your pay over six months and paid twice a year, up to ₹1,250 every six months. The slabs here are Greater Chennai’s; other local bodies in Tamil Nadu set their own, below the same ceiling.

In all, Tamil Nadu has 5 paying bands above a nil band (up to ₹3,500). The tax is a fixed amount for the band you are in, not a percentage of your pay, so a raise inside a band changes nothing and a raise across a band changes it by one step.

The ladder compares each band’s yearly tax with the ₹2,500 legal limit. A salary at the top band pays the most Tamil Nadu allows.

Each example is worked by the same engine as the calculator above, at a salary inside a different band: ₹5,000, ₹10,000 and ₹30,000. The yearly tax rises from ₹360 to ₹2,500.

The same figures apply to every employee in Tamil Nadu, whatever their gender.

03 On your payslip

How It Shows On Your Payslip

On a ₹10,000 salary, your payslip shows a “Professional tax” deduction of ₹930 in the month it is collected.

Gross pay₹10,000
Provident fund
Professional tax−₹930
Income tax (TDS)
An excerpt, not your payslip: the professional tax line is the one this page is about.

Look for a line called “Professional tax”, “PT” or “Prof. tax” among the deductions. It sits beside provident fund and income tax, and it is subtracted from your gross pay before the amount that reaches your bank.

Because Tamil Nadu collects it every six months, some payslips show it in two months only, and nothing in the others. Ask payroll which months your employer uses.
