How We Write, Check And Correct Pages
The standards every page on this site is held to.
Where The Numbers Come From
Every figure on the site is worked out by one calculation engine. The same code runs in your browser and builds the pages, so a page never carries a number typed by hand and the pages cannot disagree with the calculator. The rules the engine uses are listed on the methodology page, each with its source and the date it was checked.
How A Page Is Written And Reviewed
A page is drafted, then Zishan Khan reviews it against the rules and the sources before it goes live. The reviewer's name and the date of the last review are on every page. Zishan Khan has passed Level I of the CFA Program. That is not a tax or payroll qualification, which is why the rules are tied to primary sources and the tests are published, so you can check the work instead of trusting the credential.
Source Standards
Rules are taken from the body that makes them:
- the Income Tax Department, for slabs, rebate, surcharge, cess and deductions;
- the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, for PF and the labour codes;
- the Employees' State Insurance Corporation, for ESI;
- state notifications, for professional tax;
- the Gazette of India and the Press Information Bureau, for notifications and Cabinet decisions.
When an official page or Gazette cannot be opened, we say so. The rule then rests on two or more independent secondary sources and is graded B, or C if they conflict. A rule that rests on one source, or on our own assumption, is graded C and labelled that way. The grading is explained on the methodology page.
When Pages Are Reviewed Again
- After every Union Budget.
- When a notification changes a rate, a limit or a date the calculator uses: income tax, PF, ESI, professional tax or the labour codes.
- When a reader reports an error.
The "Last reviewed" date on a page moves only when its numbers and sources were actually checked. Fixing a typo does not change it.
Corrections
If a number is wrong, we correct the rule or the page, move the last-reviewed date, and add a line to "What changed" on the methodology page when the mistake affected a rule or a result. A wrong number is corrected in the open, not edited without a trace. To report one, write to us with the details listed on the contact page.
