01 The formula
How The Next DA Rate Is Worked Out
DA follows the average of the consumer price index for industrial workers over twelve months. For July 2026 the twelve readings give 63.76%, and only the whole number is paid: 63%. It is a formula result, not an announcement.

Under the 7th Pay Commission, DA is the rise in the twelve-month average of the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) over a fixed base, written as a percentage of basic pay. Only the whole number of the result is paid, so 63.76% becomes 63%.
The July 2026 figure uses the index from July 2025 to June 2026. Their average on the 2016 base is 148.65. Linked to the 2001 base with the factor 2.88 it is 428.11, which is 63.76% above 261.42, the figure DA is measured against.
The twelve readings come from outlets that publish the Labour Bureau’s series, and three of them reach the same 63.8%. The Bureau’s own table was not opened, so treat the result as an estimate until the Cabinet announces the rate. This page changes the moment it does.

The table lists every instalment with its effective month, the points it added, the date the Cabinet approved it and the press release it comes from. From January 2020 to June 2021 three instalments were frozen during the pandemic, so DA stayed at 17% until July 2021, when it was restored to 28% and then 31% for the July 2021 instalment.
That gap between the effective month and the announcement is why there are arrears. The usual number of months of arrears in the calculator, 3, is the middle one of the last 6 gaps.
03 Arrears
How DA Arrears Are Worked Out
Arrears are the monthly rise times the months it was not paid. At Level 7 entry pay, DA from 60% to 63% adds ₹1,455 a month, so 3 months is ₹4,365, and ₹3,961 after NPS and tax.
One month of the hike, then the months it was not paid
Read the full explanation
The monthly rise has three parts: DA on basic pay (₹1,347 here), DA on transport allowance (₹108), and HRA if the new DA crosses a threshold (₹0). The months of arrears are paid with the first salary at the new rate.
NPS or UPS takes 10% of the DA part of the arrears too (₹404 here), and the arrears are taxed in the year you receive them. The calculator works that tax as the extra tax your year pays with the arrears added, which is ₹0 here. It does not apply any relief for arrears of earlier years: ask your accounts office if that could help you.
04 HRA and transport
Does A DA Hike Change HRA?
A DA hike does not change HRA now: HRA is already at its top rate while DA is above 50%. HRA only rose when DA crossed 25% and 50%. Transport allowance gets DA on top, so it rises with every hike.
DA up to 25%24 / 16 / 8%HRA in class X / Y / Z
DA above 25%27 / 18 / 9%HRA in class X / Y / Z
DA above 50%30 / 20 / 10%HRA in class X / Y / Z

The rule is the Department of Expenditure’s of 7 July 2017: HRA goes from 24%, 16% and 8% to 27%, 18% and 9% when DA crosses 25%, and to 30%, 20% and 10% when it crosses 50%. DA crossed 50% with the July 2024 instalment (53%).
So a hike from 60% to a higher rate adds DA on basic pay and DA on transport allowance, and nothing more. The 8th Pay Commission may change this rule: see the 8th Pay Commission calculator for what that could look like.
05 Questions
Questions About DA
How is DA calculated for central government employees?
DA is a percentage of basic pay: basic pay times the DA rate. At 60%, a ₹44,900 basic gets ₹26,940 of DA. The rate itself follows the twelve-month average of the consumer price index for industrial workers, and only the whole number is paid.
What is the DA rate now?
60%, in force from January 2026 and approved on 18 April 2026, up from 58%.
What will DA be from July 2026?
It has not been announced. The index formula points to 63%. At Level 7 entry pay that adds ₹1,455 a month and, with 3 months of arrears, ₹4,365. It is an estimate until the Cabinet decides.
How do I calculate DA arrears?
Multiply the monthly rise in DA by the months it was not paid. The monthly rise is basic pay times the points of the hike, plus the same points on your transport allowance. At Level 7, 60% to 63% on ₹44,900 adds ₹1,455, so 3 months is ₹4,365.
How much were the DA arrears for January 2026?
The January 2026 hike, from 58% to 60%, added ₹970 a month at Level 7 entry pay, so 3 months of arrears is ₹2,910. Tap “Jan 2026” in the calculator to load it.
When is DA announced?
DA is revised on 1 January and 1 July. The Cabinet has announced it 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 3 months after the effective month for the last 6 instalments, typically around March and October.
Is DA arrears taxable?
Yes. Arrears of DA are taxed as salary in the year you receive them. The calculator adds them to a year at the new pay and shows the extra tax: ₹0 in this example.
Does DA count in the pension contribution?
Yes. NPS and UPS take 10% of basic pay plus DA, so a DA hike raises your contribution too, and the arrears carry it: ₹404 on the DA part in this example.
Does the DA hike change HRA?
Not now. HRA is already at 30%, 20% and 10% while DA is above 50%. It only changes when DA crosses 25% or 50%.
Will DA be merged into basic pay under the 8th Pay Commission?
The 8th Pay Commission has made no recommendation. When the 7th Pay Commission started, DA was folded into the new pay and began again at zero. The 8th Pay Commission calculator shows what that would look like at a fitment factor you choose, as projection math only.
